Annually, CGI leaders around the world meet face-to-face with business and IT executives to gather their perspectives on the trends affecting their enterprises, including business and IT priorities, IT spending and investment plans. In 2019, we conducted in-person interviews with 96 client executives in health and life sciences who cite becoming a digital organization to meet patient and customer expectations is top of mind, along with cybersecurity, optimizing operations, interoperability, health reform and mergers and acquisitions.
Becoming digital and protecting data remain the top trends
|Once again this year, health and life sciences executives cite becoming digital to meet customer and citizen expectations, and protecting data and equipment, as the first and second most impactful trends, respectively.|
In 2018, transforming the patient and customer digital experience topped the industry trends, followed by cyberprivacy and cybersecurity, budget pressures, mergers and health reform.
Enterprise strategies lag other industries, and results are taking time
Eighty-five percent of health and life sciences executives indicate having a digital strategy in place, with 32% of those not yet at the enterprise level. Fifty-three percent have strategies for their own enterprise and extending to their external ecosystem, and just 6% of those are producing results, one of the lowest percentages across industries.

Cultural change and change management is the top challenge
“Cultural change and change management” continues to be the top barrier to digital transformation for the third straight year.
Cloud usage outpaces many industries
At 86%, health and life sciences executives indicate a level of usage of cloud-based solutions that exceeds the global average across industries (76%), outpacing most sectors. Additionally, they indicated how their organization’s cloud usage is divided between private, public and hybrid clouds (as shown in the above chart). When asked if their organization has mechanisms in place to locate where key data assets are stored in the cloud, 36% do not have clarity on this question.
Benchmarking clients’ satisfaction with their own IT organization
For the second year, business and IT executives interviewed ranked their satisfaction with their own IT organizations based on the 10 key attributes of a world-class IT organization. Overall, satisfaction with internal IT is low in this industry, at an average level of 7 out of 10, consistent with the global average across industries.
