From supporting 2 trillion annual energy market transactions to pioneering hydrogen, AI and integrated clean energy ecosystems, we’ve been helping clients navigate the global evolution of energy and utility systems for five decades
Energy and utilities organizations operate at the center of global change as they underpin every other industry. Modernizing legacy networks, integrating large-scale renewables, preparing for widespread electrification and responding to rising expectations for reliability, resilience, affordability and decarbonization are essential for their success. These systems of pipelines, grids, trading markets, customer platforms and emerging clean energy ecosystems must perform flawlessly to keep economies stable and communities thriving.
Since the 1970s, we have helped these organizations lead the evolution of critical infrastructure, as they modernize, digitize and decarbonize at scale.
Today, with CGI as their long-term partner, energy and utilities leaders:
- Enable 100 million secure metering exchange transactions daily
- Advance large-scale decarbonization strategies affecting 50 million+ customers
- Support 2 trillion annual energy market transactions in 10 countries across 14 markets, using our software and services
- Build and manage emerging hydrogen, flexibility and distributed-energy ecosystems
- Maintain mission-critical control systems that keep energy flowing securely and efficiently
This reflects the scale of our clients’ operations, as well as our trusted, innovative and sustained partnership behind them as we collaborate to power the industry’s success for generations to come.
Digital foundations in gas transmission
Early advances in digital control systems for gas transmission networks set the stage for how energy organizations began modernizing high-integrity infrastructure.
Take, for example, our partnership with REN, Portugal’s national gas transport operator. They sought to modernize pipeline integrity and strengthen operational safety. We supported this effort by digitalizing monitoring workflows, improving situational awareness and enhancing compliance and control to meet evolving regulatory requirements.
“REN relies on CGI as a trusted provider of our critical pipeline integrity services, including state of the art aerial inspections. Their operational excellence and ongoing innovation help us fulfill our strategic objectives of digital transformation and realizing an integrated platform to automate processes as much as possible.” –Carlos Pires de Sousa, Asset Integrity Management (REN)
This foundation in high-integrity systems enabled decades of impact across the energy value chain.
Building the digital grid: From analogue to intelligent networks
Over the years, the energy landscape evolved. As utilities sought to modernize legacy networks and prepare for increasing electrification, we helped digitize outage processes, strengthen network intelligence and build customer-facing services.
In Finland, electricity distribution operator Elenia partnered with us to digitize operations and prepare for a data-driven, flexible grid. In Canada, we modernized field operations for a major utility, designing a human-centered mobile inspection solution spanning dams, substations and power plants, resulting in faster inspections, improved safety and significantly higher field-crew adoption.
“In terms of core functionality, the system is similar to the previous one, but the modernization—and especially the move to the cloud—has made our operations much more efficient and opened up new opportunities for further development.” – Harri Happonen, CIO of Elenia
Powering the renewable revolution
As renewable capacity surged, providers needed real-time insight across diverse asset portfolios.
Today, CGI’s Renewables Management System (RMS) monitors:
- 8,500+ wind, solar and hydro assets
- Across 12 countries on 3 continents, supporting GW-scale portfolios
- Assets powering 17M+ households
This system delivers the visibility required to balance variable energy, maintain stability and optimize production, while reducing operational costs.
With renewables accelerating, the grid was no longer just digital. It had to become decarbonized.
Leading clients into the decarbonized energy economy
Decarbonization is a whole-system challenge, from infrastructure and operations to customers, supply chains, markets and policy. We help clients accelerate this transition with measurable, strategic impact.
For example, for a major North American utility, we conducted a Scope 3 emissions assessment, prioritized pathways and identified:
- 100+ decarbonization initiatives
- Spanning 15+ high-carbon categories
- Covering billions in procurement spending
This work gave the utility a clear, data-driven roadmap for reducing emissions at scale.
Pioneering the future: Hydrogen, AI and integrated clean energy ecosystems
The energy transition’s next frontier is the integration of hydrogen, flexibility markets, AI-driven grids and cross-vector ecosystems.
In Spain, CGI supported the end-to-end control of one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen plants, built by Iberdrola. This groundbreaking facility:
- Integrates a 100 MW solar plant with a 20 MW electrolyzer
- Avoids ~48,000 tons of CO₂ annually
- Supplies green hydrogen for industrial decarbonization
Meanwhile, AI solutions are driving predictive maintenance, grid optimization and real-time decision support.
Strengthening nuclear resilience in the clean energy future
As energy systems become more digital and low-carbon, operators are reinforcing the clean, firm power that stabilizes the grid when renewables fluctuate.
EPZ, operator of the Netherlands’ Borssele nuclear power plant, sought to strengthen cyber defenses across both OT and IT environments. Using a structured attack-tree methodology aligned with MITRE ATT&CK, we helped EPZ identify vulnerabilities, prioritize risks and enhance compliance, reinforcing nuclear power’s role as a stable, low-carbon backbone of the future grid.
Working alongside the organizations powering the world today and into the future
We’re grateful to be a part of this industry’s ongoing evolution. From early pipeline control systems to today’s decarbonized, AI-powered digital distribution and customer satisfaction systems, we support organizations working to deliver cleaner, smarter, safer and more sustainable energy.
Together with our clients, we look forward to continuing to shape what comes next in the energy transition.
