An estimated 10 million people around the world are blind because of damaged corneas, but the good news is that sight can be restored for most of them through corneal transplants.

The largest percentage of these people live in India, so CGI members in India banded together to raise awareness of the need for more corneal donations and to sight donation pledges.

“Every eye donor can potentially give sight to two blind people,” said CGI member P Balaraj, who helped organize the campaign. “Unfortunately, eye donations around the world and especially in India are low due to a lack of awareness. The gap between the demand and supply is great, creating a huge need for education and donors.”

Two hundred members in our offices in Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad pledged to donate their eyes during the awareness campaign. An eye screening campaign was also conducted at the same time, and approximately 600 members had their eyes examined by a health services provider.
