At CGI, we are committed to investing in STEM engagement and inspiring young minds to imagine a better future.

As part of this commitment, we recently took part in the exciting ‘Building Blocks’ event at The Catalyst in Newcastle, hosted by Newcastle Helix. The two-day event brought together CGI team members and Year 5 students from local schools for a hands-on, immersive experience designed to spark curiosity and creativity through technology.

Bringing STEM to life with AI and Minecraft

Throughout the event, pupils took part in unique and interactive sessions that introduced them to the world of geospatial data using artificial intelligence and the popular game Minecraft.

Over the two days, students engaged in two core activities:

  • Designing AI-powered space rovers with ChatGPT
Students used their imagination and ideas to create futuristic space rovers with the help of ChatGPT. This activity encouraged them to explore how artificial intelligence works, while also learning that—just like humans—AI can make mistakes and improve through feedback.

  • Tackling Minecraft challenges using real-world geospatial data
In a timed series of Minecraft missions, students navigated custom-built digital worlds powered by open-source data from the UK’s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey. These challenges highlighted how geospatial data is not only critical to our daily lives but also embedded in the games and tools young people use every day.

From exploring the streets of Newcastle to discovering London’s landmarks, the Minecraft worlds brought geography and mapping to life in ways that students could engage with and understand.

Maps as tools for discovery and creativity

Each session began with a short video led by the event’s fictional host, the ‘Lord of the Block’, who introduced key geospatial concepts in a fun and accessible way. Students learned how maps go beyond navigation—they are powerful tools for discovery, analysis and creativity.

Shaping the future through community engagement

Events like Building Blocks reflect our mission to give back to our communities by supporting early engagement in digital careers. By providing young people with access to real-world data, emerging technology and mentorship, we help them build the skills and confidence to become the tech innovators of tomorrow.
