Introducing Wendy Sabaroche
I’m Wendy Sabaroche, a Director of Consulting Delivery for CGI in the UK, within the Space, Defence, & Intelligence business unit. I have been with CGI for almost 18 years, joining as a graduate, and have built a wealth of experience along the way. Outside of work, I volunteer as Chair of Governors, using my skills to help support and challenge the school's performance. When I’m not juggling family life with my husband and our three energetic kids, I enjoy winding down with a good crime thriller, sci-fi boxset or diving into creative hobbies; but as huge fan of word puzzles and LinkedIn games, I’m always looking for a fun challenge to fit into my day!
How would you describe your personal leadership style, and why do you think it resonates with your team?
My personal leadership style is people-centric and encouraging. I believe that an essential aspect of effective leadership is understanding and valuing the different perspectives within the team. As an enthusiastic problem solver, I approach challenges with an open mind, considering all angles to find the best solutions.
My passion for mentoring and helping others achieve their goals is a cornerstone of my leadership. By prioritising the growth and development of my team members, I cultivate an environment where everyone can flourish. The wellbeing of my team and colleagues is my top priority. This dedication is reflected in my active involvement with CGI’s REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) Network and active allyship to other DEI (Diversity, equity and inclusion) networks.
I believe that when people feel supported and valued, they are more motivated and empowered to excel in their roles. This is why my leadership style resonates with my team and contributes to a positive, productive work environment.
You’ve been with CGI since joining as a graduate, how have leaders, like the one you are today, supported you in your career?
I have been fortunate to work with great managers and colleagues who helped me through highlighting opportunities for growth: suggesting new challenges with greater responsibilities that contributed to my professional development. During my early career, I felt shy and uncomfortable raising any questions in meetings, not wanting to "say the wrong thing" or "be singled out" especially being one of only a few women on a large project. However, I worked in a supportive environment that cultivated open communication, recognition and encouragement. Finally, as one mentor told me "take every opportunity to extend your network", which has always stuck with me to this day, you never know what doors may open from your daily interactions.
What’s one leadership lesson that has shaped how you lead teams and people today?
Developing resilience and the skill to navigate challenges with a positive mindset has been a valuable lesson. Leaders have to guide their teams through turbulent times not just happier ones. Resilient leaders have to inspire their team to stay motivated and focused even in difficult times. (I am sure that any longsuffering Arsenal fans will agree with me!) All jokes aside, leaders have to be ready to face anything and it’s important to know how to what resources, knowledge and people are needed to help weather any storms.
In what ways do you plan to continue growing as a leader, and how do you stay motivated?
Feedback, reflection and setting goals are part of my continuous learning toolset. I seek 360 feedback from my manager, my team, client and colleagues to understand my areas for improvement, and key strengths. Weekly reflection on actions due, decisions made, PDP (personal development plan) progress and highlight training areas helps me to keep the right priorities in focus. Staying motivated in both my career and personal goals is essential for alignment, whether I'm adapting my Agile approach at work or teaching myself to play the guitar.
As a member of our REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) Network, how do you see the intersection of race, ethnicity, and cultural heritage playing a critical role in accelerating action for women’s equality?
I recognise the profound impact that the intersection of race, ethnicity, and cultural heritage has in advancing women's equality as this provides unique insights and experiences that are essential in shaping inclusive and effective strategies for gender equality. Understanding and acknowledging the diverse experiences of women from different racial and ethnic backgrounds enables us to address the specific challenges they face. For example, women of colour often experience compounded discrimination based on both gender and race. By addressing these intersectional issues, we can create more equitable solutions that benefit all women. Cultural heritage plays a pivotal role in shaping identity and values. By embracing and celebrating diverse cultural backgrounds, we foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding. This inclusivity helps break down barriers and stereotypes, enabling women to thrive both professionally and personally. The REACH Network provides a platform to amplify underrepresented voices, so we can highlight the unique contributions and perspectives of women from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. This, in turn, promotes a richer and more diverse dialogue around women's equality.
Congratulations on your recent nomination for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black Tech Achievement Awards 2025! What does this mean to you?
I was astounded to be nominated and feel honoured to be considered. I never went into tech for plaudits, I just loved finding out how things worked and how I could play a part in the ever-growing tech landscape. This nomination not only acknowledges my individual contributions and achievements but also highlights the collective efforts of the many talented individuals and teams I've had the privilege to work with over the years.
This recognition means so much to me because it underscores the importance of diversity, inclusion, and representation in the tech industry. It serves as a reminder of the progress we've made and the work that still lies ahead to ensure that opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. Ultimately, this nomination is a celebration of the resilience, creativity, and excellence of the Black community in technology. It is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact that diverse voices can have in shaping the future of tech.
