My career began in late 2022 when I joined CGI on the graduate programme, I am now a Software Engineer within the Government and Justice Business Unit, where I develop and maintain software applications as part of an agile team. Throughout my career journey at CGI I have been able to gain valuable experience in different areas of software development, from testing to full-stack development. I have also had the opportunity to work with various technologies and tools, allowing me to expand my skillset and knowledge.
A career shaped by diverse experiences
As a Software Tester, I was responsible for designing and executing test cases, identifying bugs, and ensuring the quality of software releases. This experience taught me the importance of attention to detail, the value of rigorous testing and how to think critically about potential issues from an end-user perspective. After a few months, I transitioned into a software development role, where I started working on developing new features and fixing issues identified during testing. This role allowed me to apply my testing insights to improve code quality and build more robust applications. I learned various programming languages, development frameworks and best practices in software engineering.
Overall, the skills I developed in my earlier roles have been instrumental in my success as a Software Engineer. The attention to detail and quality assurance mindset from my testing days, combined with the coding expertise and presentation skills from my development experience, have enabled me to ensure high-quality software delivery and communicate our work clearly to stakeholders. These experiences have not only shaped my career but also prepared me well for future challenges and opportunities in software engineering
Evolving goals and a dynamic mindset
The number one contributor to my career progression has been consistently stepping out of my comfort zone, trying new things, and learning from others. I pushed myself to learn coding in different tech stacks, which broadened my skill set and opened up new opportunities. By taking on challenging projects, seeking mentorship, and collaborating with diverse teams, I gained invaluable skills and insights. This mindset of continuous learning and embracing new experiences has been instrumental in my growth, enabling me to take on more complex roles and responsibilities successfully.
CGI has been instrumental in providing the learning opportunities, training, and support needed to grow my skills and career. Additionally, personal development days allow me to focus on skill enhancement and professional growth. The mentorship I've received has been invaluable. Initially, my primary goal was to build a strong foundation in technical proficiency. However, as time progressed, I've shifted my focus towards specialisation in specific technologies and domains that align closely with my interests and career aspirations. Skill-wise, I have deepened my knowledge in various programming languages and frameworks relevant to my chosen specialisation. This period has also been instrumental in honing my problem-solving abilities, refining my analytical skills, and gaining proficiency in new technologies essential to advancing within my field. Attitude-wise, I have cultivated a proactive and growth-oriented mindset. I actively seek out learning opportunities and challenges that allow me to expand my knowledge and skills. This approach has enabled me to adapt quickly to evolving industry trends and stay at the forefront of technological advancements.
Making an Impact through Technology
I have had the opportunity to work on exciting multimillion-pound projects for a couple of clients in Government and Justice. For one, I was involved in developing a case management system that streamlined processes and improved efficiency in handling cases. For the other, I worked on a digital transformation project aimed at modernising systems to enhance accessibility and transparency.
My responsibilities included designing and implementing key software components, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring the systems met stringent security and compliance standards. What makes these projects particularly rewarding is knowing that my work directly impacts society. By improving the efficiency and accessibility of the justice system, we are helping to ensure that legal processes are fair, transparent, and swift. It's gratifying to see how the technology we develop can make a real difference in people’s lives

Finding the right balance
Outside of my role, I enjoy several hobbies and activities that enrich my life in various ways: I find solace in reading fiction and non-fiction books as well as podcasts. It's a way for me to unwind, expand my knowledge, and gain different perspectives on life and the world around me. Hiking and nature walks allow me to disconnect from technology, recharge mentally, and stay physically active. Moreover, experimenting with new recipes and techniques in the kitchen is a creative outlet for me. I find joy in preparing meals for and creating something delicious from scratch.
