Mayank Khandelwal joined CGI as a Data Scientist in 2018. As an experienced professional, Mayank splits his time between working on client projects and sharing his knowledge and passion for data science, cloud technology, machine learning, and artificial intelligence – both inside and outside of CGI.
Computers were a strong presence in Mayank’s life from a very early age, so a career in IT later came naturally.
“I had my first experience with a computer when I was three years old. My father had a career in IT even before I was born, and I got to see his work and technology very closely, every day”, Mayank reminisces.
In 2016, Mayank embarked on a pivotal journey from India to Finland to pursue his master’s degree in Aalto University’s Data Science program. He undertook his master’s thesis for CGI, and this marked the beginning of his professional journey in the field of data science.

Data science: predictions, mimicking human behavior, and much more…
Mayank holds a strong belief that every human possesses two elements at a fundamental level: curiosity about the future and a need to connect with people who think, act, and communicate similarly to yourself. This view on life was one of the main reasons Mayank was drawn to data science.
“Humans have always tried to achieve fulfillment in life through mastering these fundamental elements. My small, yet significant way to achieve this through formal means has been through the areas of data science which aim at prediction, mimicking human behavior, and much more”, Mayank explains.
Expertise in Amazon Web Services and other cloud platforms
At CGI, Mayank’s official role is an expert in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. In practice, his days are filled end-to-end with responsibilities as a solution architect and a developer, and in sales and recruitment.
“What I love most about my role is that I often get to see a project all the way through, from just a rudimentary idea in a room to a final product used by millions of end-users. It’s very fulfilling to see ideas grow like this”, Mayank says.
One large part of data science work is cloud platforms, which help scale up the processing of large data sets. Mayank’s deep experience with Amazon Web Services and other cloud platforms, combined with strong industry knowledge and certain technical certifications, netted him a direct contact from Amazon Web Services:
“Based on my CGI project delivery experience with AWS Machine Learning, as well as my other data science related engagements, I was asked by Amazon Web Services to be a part of their AWS Subject Matter Expert program, specializing in machine learning. It’s great to strengthen our relationship with partners like AWS. The resulting knowledge and certification are of great value for my work at CGI. It also helps me with my volunteering work, where I educate organizations on cloud platforms, machine learning, and how to best utilize data and knowledge.”
