This is a guest blog co-authored by Jeevan Namboodiri (Senior Consultant, 5G SME - CGI UK) and Alan Choy (Vice President Consulting Expert - CGI Canada) - for techUK’s AI in Intelligent Networks Awareness Day on 30 October 2025.
For years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed industries by connecting billions of devices. But the future of connectivity is already in motion. As drones, autonomous vehicles and mobile robots move through our cities, ports and industrial sites, they generate huge volumes of data - requiring intelligent networks that are agile, responsive and sustainable.
At CGI, we believe intelligent networks must do more than connect things - they must deliver measurable outcomes. This means enabling communications service providers (CSPs), local authorities and industry leaders to reduce emissions, improve operational efficiency, and open new revenue streams.
In collaboration with a consortium of global telecom operators, CGI played a leading role within TM Forum’s recent Catalyst 805 project, Autonomous and sustainable IoT ecosystems at scale – Phase II - showing how artificial intelligence (AI) and orchestration can unlock the potential of the Internet of Moving Things (IoMT). The results were showcased at DTW25 – Ignite, highlighting how cross-industry collaboration is enabling intelligent networks to become more adaptive, sustainable, and commercially viable
Delivering real-time intelligence at scale
As a core innovator within the project team, CGI co-developed a modular, multi-agent AI system that allows CSPs to optimise how mobile assets operate across large and complex areas. The solution blends intelligent orchestration with sustainability controls, allowing real-time decisions to be made based on environmental performance, network coverage and operational demand.
Key components include:
- Coverage monitoring to ensure drones and robots operate in zones with optimal connectivity.
- Energy efficiency benchmarking, helping to reduce carbon footprint during operations.
- Automated service decisions, such as rerouting or recharging based on current demand.
- Conversational AI dashboards, enabling operators to ask natural language questions and receive real-time insights.
This approach embeds energy optimisation directly into the orchestration layer, ensuring performance and environmental outcomes are tracked together, not separately. GenAI dashboards give operators real-time ESG insights, simplifying compliance with global sustainability standards.
Use cases grounded in outcomes
The Catalyst initiative demonstrates how intelligent networks can support real-world applications across multiple sectors:
- Smart ports: Autonomous drones deliver surveillance and logistics support with seamless network handover at the edge.
- Urban mobility: Vehicles and devices optimise their paths in real time to avoid congestion and reduce emissions.
- Smart cities: Environmental monitoring systems respond dynamically to pollution or energy demand.
- Manufacturing and Industry 4.0: Predictive maintenance ensures uptime while conserving energy.
Each scenario shows how CSPs can monetise 5G and IoMT through usage-based services, on-demand network slicing, and value-added insights.
Sustainability meets innovation
As the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) market continues to grow - forecast to expand at more than 30% CAGR between 2025 and 2030 - there is a clear opportunity for CSPs and enterprises to lead with purpose.
Catalyst 805 demonstrates that intelligent networks can do more than move data. By embedding ethical AI, energy optimisation and real-time automation, they enable organisations to monetise innovation while reducing their carbon footprint.
This is the future of connected ecosystems: where commercial value and sustainability go hand in hand.
Looking ahead: delivering outcomes through collaboration
The future of IoT is moving, and networks must move with it. As industries transition to the Internet of Moving Things, intelligent networks will be the foundation of digital transformation - and CGI is helping to build that foundation today.
We take pride in co-creating solutions that not only address technical challenges but also drive meaningful outcomes. Catalyst 805 proves that with intelligent orchestration, AI, and sustainability-driven design, we can build ecosystems that are inclusive, sustainable, built for scale - and in motion.
