In this article Melanie Sylvester shares how her career at CGI has evolved across disciplines, from technical development to application support, and now into marketing and communications within the Government and Justice team. Her journey highlights the opportunities to grow, learn, and contribute to meaningful outcomes.

Whether supporting justice services behind the scenes or helping to tell our story externally, my career at CGI has been filled with opportunities to grow, adapt and contribute in meaningful ways. After starting out in a technical role, I’m now exploring the world of marketing and communications within our Government and Justice Business Unit, and I’ve felt supported every step of the way.

Owning my career path

I joined CGI in September 2023 as a Technical Graduate after completing my BSc in Computer Science and Mathematics. Early on, I was encouraged to take part in innovation initiatives like the Student Kickstart Initiative (SKI), where I helped design a PowerPoint add-in. I led user research and stakeholder engagement, presented the idea to leadership and helped secure funding for implementation. It was a brilliant introduction to CGI’s culture of ownership.

I then moved into the role of Application Support Analyst, supporting justice sector clients monitor applications through  a web-based tool that displays real-time RAG (red/amber/green) status updates.. I was responsible for resolving issues, enhancing applications and improving performance, always with the client’s experience in mind. I also helped decommission legacy systems and contributed to compliance and process optimisation. Working in this space gave me a clear view of how our technology supports critical public services, which made my work feel purposeful.

Creating beyond the code

CGI has given me the chance to explore beyond my technical background. I’m currently doing a rotation in our Marketing and Communications team, which has opened the door to new skills including content creation, stakeholder engagement and strategic messaging. It’s been a rewarding shift that’s helping me become more well-rounded and confident in cross-functional environments.

Being able to move across disciplines like this speaks to how CGI encourages creativity, not just in what we deliver, but in how we grow. The work in Central Government is dynamic and having the ability to adapt quickly is key. Whether using tools like Jira and Azure to stay organised or responding to shifting client needs, I’ve learned how to think strategically and respond with agility.

Growing through support

From the beginning, I’ve felt part of a supportive and inclusive community. Networks like REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage), the Young Professionals Network, and the Women’s Network helped me feel connected right away. Within the Government and Justice business unit, there’s a strong culture of trust, accountability and long-term commitment to not just our clients, but each other.

The learning opportunities at CGI have been incredible. Through CGI Academia and the Learning & Development Passport, I’ve completed nearly 40 courses covering technical, communication and leadership skills. Structured development plans, mentorship and encouragement to pursue certifications have helped me stay on track with my career goals while staying current with industry trends.

Looking Ahead

I’m excited to continue growing within the Government and Justice Business Unit, taking on new challenges, deepening my expertise and building on the communications experience I’m gaining now. It’s a business area that’s constantly evolving to meet government priorities and being part of that transformation is a privilege.

At CGI, I’ve had the chance to shape a career that’s both impactful and uniquely mine and that’s something I’m proud of.
