Logica, now part of CGI has won the “Excellence in Major Healthcare IT Development” category as well as being crowned “Overall Winner” at the ehealth Insider (EHI) Awards 2012.
The CGI team overcame competition from nearly 300 original entries to be named “Overall Winner” at the coveted awards, as well as receiving industry-wide recognition for its innovative Defence Medical Information Capability Programme (DMICP) and Whole Hospital Information System (WHIS), which have helped improve the delivery of healthcare within the military.
The UK MOD’s Defence Medical Services are responsible for the primary, intermediate, secondary and dental healthcare of every member of the Armed Forces, irrespective of where they are based in the world. Before Logica’s innovative centralised systems were implemented the Defence Medical Services relied on standalone systems, which presented significant difficulties in the fast moving environment in which the armed forces operate.
The Defence Medical Information Capability Programme means a patient’s single medical and dental record is updated instantly so there is only “one version of the truth”. Clinicians anywhere can access any patient’s record (subject to Caldicott constraints), improving health outcomes and inspiring patient confidence. A significant reduction in paperwork, leads to improved record-keeping and reporting, and administrative savings. Analysts can access concurrent health data for epidemiology and health surveillance, while managers can apply governance and monitor performance.
In addition, the secondary care Whole Hospital Information System, operates at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, providing electronic patient records, patient administration and business intelligence capability to one of the world’s busiest trauma units. Frontline commanders benefit from having easy access to full medical records and therefore more troops fit for duty, and improved health information on deployable manpower.
“We are delighted with the recognition received at this year’s EHI awards;” said Paula Sussex, Head of Public Services, CGI. “Delivering integrated care records across geographies is one of the holy grails of healthcare IT, and the phenomenal example of DMICP shows it can be done in a very challenging environment. We are immensley proud of DMICP and WHIS; the innovation and technical ability that is showcased through the systems themselves as well as the successful delivery which has brought a raft of health and operational benefits that help protect the lives of our armed forces wherever they are serving.”
The Surgeon General, Surgeon Vice Admiral P I Raffaelli said, “I was delighted to see that your team won both the overall award and the award for excellence in major healthcare IT development at the ehealth Insider Awards for the Defence Medical Information Capability Programme . The result is even more impressive given that the overall field of shortlisted entries was clearly of a very high standard with a vast range of innovative IT solutions aimed at improving patient care in the NHS.”
