The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the official government body responsible for collecting, analysing and publishing statistics about the UK’s economy, population and society. Its Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) has served as a vital source of accurate business data for over 30 years, used across government to support policy development and reporting. However, the legacy system needed significant updates to meet evolving user expectations, accessibility requirements, and Government Digital Service (GDS) standards.

To support the ONS in modernising the IDBR, CGI developed a secure, web-based national business register designed to improve user experience, streamline data access and increase system efficiency. Working with more than 70 internal database users and external departments, CGI mapped user journeys, identified common challenges and used agile methodologies to prototype and refine a browser-based solution.

Through collaboration with ONS teams, CGI is delivering a flexible, future-facing platform that supports faster and more accurate reporting, enhanced usability and greater adaptability to new technologies. The solution also introduced automation features that improve data integrity and reduce the need for specialist support.

Key benefits:

  • Accelerated and digitalised workflows that drive greater efficiency
  • Improved reporting through enhanced visualisation of relevant data
  • Self-service functionality that reduces dependency on specialist support
  • Greater accuracy through automation, supporting more valuable outputs
  • A more efficient and accessible user experience
  • Stronger adaptability to evolving technologies and working practices
