CGI Career Catapult continued its work in March 2026 with a three-day learning programme for more than 130 sixth form business students at Newcastle College, delivered during the college’s Industry Employer Week.
Run in collaboration with DWP Digital, the programme gave students a practical introduction to life after education, helping them build confidence, explore career pathways and develop the skills employers look for.
Across the three days, CGI and government volunteers led a series of lectures, case studies and practical workshop and interactive sessions, bringing real-world business considerations and skills to life. Students took part in CV reviews, mock assessments, stakeholder analysis exercises and informal networking sessions, giving them the chance to practice workplace skills in a supportive setting and ask questions directly to professionals.
Working closely with Newcastle College, CGI volunteers designed the sessions to complement the existing Business Studies curriculum while adding a real-world dimension. The sessions were led by volunteers from CGI and DWP Digital. This cross-organisational collaboration gave students exposure to a range of career journeys and different perspectives on working in the public and private sectors.
Throughout the workshop, students noticeably gained confidence, with volunteers commenting that they became more engaged and willing to contribute over time. Those who initially approached the activities with caution began to take part more actively, stepping outside of their comfort zones. They demonstrably understood the value of the behaviours and attributes that employers place great value in, for example teamwork and collaboration, communication, respect, giving and accepting challenge and feedback appropriately.
For many students, the most valuable part of the week was the chance to practise essential employability skills in a realistic environment. One student highlighted “learning how to properly write a CV and how to network with employers to improve employability” as a key takeaway from the sessions.
The collaboration between CGI, DWP Digital, and Newcastle College was central to the success of the event. By creating content relevant to the students and the curriculum, and delivering it in an open and engaging environment, the programme allowed students to learn from professionals, build confidence, skills and understanding, and have honest conversations about careers, expectations, and future opportunities.
Career Catapult continues to strengthen the connection between education and industry by creating opportunities like this, where students can gain practical experience, develop confidence, broaden their career awareness, and take meaningful steps towards their future careers.
