We all know that being digitally connected has become one of the most important needs in our modern society. Technology is evolving, continuously providing a better user experience, but there are still challenges to be tackled: with 5G commercially available, users expect to have the same quality of internet experience anytime, anywhere.
Satellite communications play an important role in the extension of 5G cellular networks to rural and hard-to-reach areas, including aeroplanes, trains, boats and other vehicles, especially in regions of the planet traditionally beyond the reach of cellular companies.
Moreover, new developments in the satellite communications eco-system have overcome previous limitations, such as the new generation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations reducing latency in satellite communications, and technical advances in Geostationary (GEO) satellite, providing high throughput and improvements in GEO satellites robustness*.
In this context, not only satellite is increasingly being used as the most cost-effective backhaul alternative to terrestrial networks but also, there is increasing interest and participation from 3GPP into the satellite communication industry to integrate satellite and terrestrial network infrastructure, in relation to of 5G.
