Every spring, communities across the globe celebrate Earth Hour, Earth Day and Earth Month to promote the importance of protecting the environment. The CGI community, as part of our CSR commitment, joins in these celebrations each year, and in 2012, organized a wide variety of activities to get us thinking about the environment and what each of us can do to help protect it.

On March 31, CGI offices and professionals across the globe participated in Earth Hour, turning off their lights for a designated hour to help generate awareness of the need for carbon emission reduction and energy conservation. Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments participate in Earth Hour each year, making it the largest environmental event in the world.

Many activities were also organized across CGI’s operations to commemorate Earth Day and Earth Month. CGI professionals, for example, were given an opportunity to vote for a green nonprofit organization to which CGI would make a donation, and they also gave back to other nonprofits during the month by funding and volunteering for local environmental projects.

In addition, a “CGI Unplugged” event was held to encourage CGI professionals to unplug their electronics at the end of each day, and CGI professionals, in honor of Arbor Day, volunteered to plant an orchard at a nonprofit’s farm.

“It was a great month for rallying CGI members around the global cause of environmental protection,” shared Stephanie Dorn, who organized the U.S. Green@CGI Earth Month activities. “It was a privilege and also fun to come together to generate awareness across CGI and help ‘green’ our local communities. We look forward to next year’s celebrations.”
