The challenge

In 2020, Finnpark had a strategic objective to create differentiated value from its considerable store collection of parking data. Taival and Finnpark cooperation started from a set of joint workshops to define the digital business opportunities available to them – together with other senior leaders from Tampere mobility and traffic-related companies.

Solutions

As a result of the workshop, Finnpark and Taival continued to develop and combine the ideas into a feasible business model, which combined both sustainability and data – the concept of Green Parking. This concept combined the classic park&ride system used by municipalities with innovative business mechanics such as CO2-compensated public transportation and flexible implementation to any location with camera-based license plate tracking.

After an initial phase of cooperation, Finnpark assigned Taival the concept owner role for Green Parking for a 6– month period. Finnpark chose Taival not only because of the initial successful cooperation, but also due to the unique combination of business connections, deep understanding of the emission market mechanics, data and technology business skills, and experience of successful funding processes.

The concept owner had three key objectives:

  • Continue to lead the business model development internally into a ready product
  • Initiate, design, and implement the technical architecture and development activities
  • Identify and apply for funding to enable the next stage of development for the concept

Benefits

During the six months, Taival completed applications and negotiations for funding from both Business Finland and Sitra and improved connections with both Tampere and Espoo municipalities. The Finnpark and Taival team developed the necessary technical and business architecture to implement and operate the business model and created internal buy-in for the concept as well as sales decks for further customer conversations. The cooperation will continue with further implementation in Q4/23 work once the funding processes have successfully been completed.
