Cloud transition is a complex but essential journey for modern organizations. By aligning cloud strategies with business needs, utilizing AI tools, and maintaining robust governance, organizations can navigate this transition effectively.
In this episode of CloudStream, host Riz Haque from CGI Global Intellectual Solutions and Innovation discusses the role of cloud transition with Harri Hietanen, a seasoned expert on the subject.
Aligning Cloud Strategy with Business Needs
Cloud Architect Harri Hietanen emphasizes that cloud transition is guided by a well-defined cloud strategy. "It is one thing that leads the whole cloud transition," he explains. Post-transition, a robust governance model is essential to maintain control and security.
Harri also highlights the importance of utilizing AI in this context. "At CGI, we have developed various AI helpers that assist customers in different phases of the cloud transition," he notes. These tools, such as application assessment helpers, analyze data and simplify the modernization and migration process, which is often very manual.
Harri stresses that a cloud strategy must be closely aligned with the business strategy. "We are not talking about developing business processes; we focus on defining internal and external drivers, objectives, and goals," he says. The technology must enable the organization, and successful change depends on three elements: people, process, and technology. "If you can change these things simultaneously, you can reap the real benefits of the cloud," Harri asserts.
According to Harri, the quality of data is paramount. "Way too often, the data we need to analyze doesn't support decision-making for the cloud journey," he points out. Organizations must ensure their data is accurate and actionable to guide their cloud transition effectively.
Challenges and Considerations
Harri acknowledges that many organizations face increased costs during cloud transition due to a lack of control over their cloud environment.
"If you do not have the right governance model, your cloud environment will be fragmented, leading to security issues and rising costs," he warns. A clear and comprehensive strategy is crucial for all stakeholders to understand the cloud direction and align with the business strategy.
Organizations often struggle with choosing the right cloud partner and service provider. Harri advises having a good governance model that defines the cloud's role within the organization. "Many of our customers have decided to let the IT unit offer a controlled, cost-effective cloud platform, while business units build their applications on top of it," he explains. This approach ensures consistent policies and rules across the organization.
Harri shares that successful transitions involve business participation in the process. "The more challenging projects focus too much on technology without aligning with business needs," he observes. Business involvement is key to a successful cloud transition.
