Annually, CGI leaders around the world meet face-to-face with business and IT executives to gather their perspectives on the trends affecting their enterprises, including business and IT priorities, budgets and investment plans. In 2019, we conducted in-person interviews with 70 client executives in the transportation, post and logistics sector who cite becoming digital, protecting through cybersecurity, optimizing operations and modernizing legacy systems as dominant drivers this year.

Digital transformation to meet customer expectations is the highest-impact trend  

Among the executives we interviewed, becoming digital organizations to meet customer/citizen expectations is the highest-impact trend for 2019, consistent with last year.

Protecting through cybersecurity is the second most impactful trend, followed by investing in analytics technologies to improve asset visibility. Adopting mobile technologies to improve field crew operations and customer engagement is now the fourth highest-impact trend, changing places with driving new partnership technologies and business models, which now ranks fifth.

Key findings

33% have a defined enterprise digital strategy

Seventy-nine percent of transportation, post and logistics executives report having a digital strategy in place. Of these, 33% have launched their enterprise-wide strategies, and 19% report having a digital strategy that includes their ecosystem partners.

“Cultural change and change management” cited as top challenge

In 2019, once again, the key challenge to achieving digital transformation objectives for transportation, post and logistics executives is “cultural change and change management,” followed by legacy system and agility constraints, also second last year, but with lesser emphasis this year.

This year we asked executives to share how they are using cloud computing, and 43% indicate they are using it for their own organization, 3% for customers, and 38% for both, for a total of 84% using the cloud, which is above the global average (76%) across the industries covered in our interviews. Additionally, they indicated how their organization’s cloud usage is divided between private, public and hybrid clouds (as shown in the above chart). When asked if their organizations have mechanisms in place to locate where key data assets are stored in the cloud, 21% of executives do not have clarity on this issue.

For the second year, business and IT executives interviewed ranked their satisfaction with their own IT organizations based on the 10 key attributes of a world-class IT organization. Overall, transportation, post and logistics executives cite generally low levels of satisfaction with their own internal IT organization, especially for the attributes of ensuring a stable IT operational environment and providing high quality services (0.6 gap with lower business leader satisfaction).
