The Security Operations Center of the IT service company CGI will be charged with monitoring cyber security for Finnish Red Cross Blood Service. The agreement will help Blood Service to produce and secure its socially critical service even in times of crisis.

“Blood Service is a service reliability critical operator. In practice, blood products cannot be utilised without reliable, protected information. That’s why securing information is not only vital for our operations – it is also a national necessity,” explains Heikki Myllyniemi, CIO, Blood Service.

Blood Service is in charge of the centralised maintenance of blood products for the whole of Finland. Among other things, its responsibilities comprise recruiting blood donors, testing blood donations, producing and storing blood products as well as distributing them to hospitals.

From now on, events in Blood Service’s key IT systems are monitored by CGI’s Security Operations Center (SOC). In addition to monitoring, CGI’s analysts will analyse potential data security offsets, report attempted cyber attacks and instruct Blood Service on how to fix data security problems.

“In addition to continuous monitoring, we have the permanent readiness to investigate events and manage and perform recovery measures. In other words, should threat scenarios turn into an actual cyber attack, our experts can be quickly brought in and up to speed. Their task then is to limit the attack and the damage, perform the required additional protective measures and ensure that the operations of Blood Service can return to normal as quickly as possible,” says Jan Mickos, Director, Cyber Security, CGI Finland.

The Security Operations Center in Finland is one of the service centres in CGI’s global SOC network, tasked with providing services specifically for Finnish and Scandinavian companies and public organisations. CGI’s SOC is a 24/7 technology- and operator-independent service.

Systematic blood services first saw daylight in Finland during the II World War, when the Finnish Defence Forces developed a blood service for the treatment of wounded soldiers. After the war, Blood Service became the responsibility of the Finnish Red Cross, in collaboration with hospitals. The FRC Blood Service is one of the most efficient and advanced blood services in the world.
