Helping insurers take the consumer insurance journey to the next level
The challenge
Auto insurance remains complex for many Canadians. Consumers struggle to interpret policy details and understand how insurer decisions affect them, and they often lack visibility into how their choices influence premiums. At the same time, they increasingly expect simple, personalized digital support that makes coverage easier to navigate and manage.
This expectation is reinforced in CGI’s 2025 Voice of our Clients survey, where 65% of Canadian insurers ranked improving the customer experience through personalized digital capabilities as a top priority, with more than half planning investments in digital tools and channels over the next three years. The Canadian Association of Financial Institutions in Insurance (CAFII) has also called for innovation to make insurance simpler and more accessible, underscoring the urgency for change.
A new approach
CGI has developed myAutoPlus, a free app that makes auto insurance more transparent and actionable for Canadians*. By equipping drivers with direct access to the same data insurers use, it builds trust and enables more effective interactions between consumers and providers.
At its core, myAutoPlus is powered by CGI’s Insurance Information Services (IIS) platform — the proven data backbone of Canada’s P&C insurance industry for more than 35 years. IIS aggregates and enriches industry-wide policy and claims data, supporting the majority of Canadian P&C insurers.
Built on this foundation, myAutoPlus turns centralized industry data into personalized insights on auto insurance policies and claims. This creates a more straightforward experience for consumers while highlighting the value of insurance products and their features.
Features that support clarity and efficiency
- myAutoPlus report – Industry groups such as the Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) and the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators (CCIR) have stressed the need for greater transparency and clearer communication in insurance. The myAutoPlus Report addresses this concern by giving drivers a consolidated view of their policies, claims, and risk data – the same information that insurers rely on. This shared reference point reduces misunderstandings, prevents disputes, and lowers service costs.
- Insurance score – Most drivers see themselves as safe, yet may not know where they fall on Canada’s insurance risk spectrum. Powered by a proprietary algorithm, the Insurance Score works like a credit score quantifying key profile data for insights on how insurers assess risk. It highlights driving strengths and areas for improvement, helping consumers better manage premiums and make confident coverage decisions.
- Policy planner – Allows consumers to model potential changes – like moving to a different address or changing vehicles – and see how these would affect their rates. For insurers, this acts as a level-setting tool, aligning consumer expectations with underwriting realities, while streamlining policy adjustments, and supporting stronger client retention.
- FAQs & myInsurance news – These features provide straightforward explanations to common insurance questions and share timely articles and insights. They make policy details accessible, keep drivers informed, and reduce routine inquiries to call centers.
- Broker search – An in-app list of licensed insurance brokers that consumers can approach while reviewing their coverage needs. This simplifies broker access and ensures advice is timely and relevant, while for insurers it strengthens advisory effectiveness and distribution channels.
- Anti-theft device registration – Helps drivers lower risk by registering vehicle security devices. By encouraging and tracking which vehicles are protected, insurers can reduce exposure to theft-related claims and support their loss prevention.
Looking ahead
Insurance is often a complicated topic for consumers, given the intricacies of coverage and risk. myAutoPlus simplifies the process for consumers and providers with timely, precise data and insights that all stakeholders can act on.
CGI is continuing to expand myAutoPlus with new features. Planned enhancements will strengthen consumer data insights and integrate property insurance, creating a more complete, one-stop solution for personal insurance.
“CGI’s goal with myAutoPlus is to foster a greater understanding of insurance among consumers, simplifying the insurance journey for everyone involved,” says CGI’s Ian McLean. “Providers will see a much better fit when their clients are more fully educated and engaged with the products they are choosing.”
