The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps have a complex mission, with operations on land, in the air and at sea. Created to protect the nation’s maritime interests, the Navy operates a fleet of nearly 500 ships, plus thousands of aircraft, weapons systems and other equipment. The Marine Corps are the landing forces, taking the fight from the sea to the shoreline and beyond.

Today’s Navy and Marine Corps operate in fast-moving technological world, facing emerging and evolving cyber threats along with conventional warfare. As they demand the best of themselves Navy/USMC leaders also demand the best in their industry partners.

CGI proudly supports the Navy and Marine Corps in their multi-faceted, ever-evolving mission, providing our specific expertise in defense logistics, field service engineering, training, and systems operations and modernization to deliver mission results.

Capabilities

Defense Logistics

Logistics is the art and science of ensuring the right equipment is available to personnel when and where it is needed—an indispensable capability for warfighters and support teams.

The Marine Corps Platform Integration Center (MCPIC) exemplifies CGI’s expertise in defense logistics. MCPIC provides real-time asset visibility, identification, and location information supporting audit and inventory management, force deployment, distribution, and execution. We developed MCPIC with a continual inventory process and an intuitive web-based platform to provide 100% accurate accounting of all mission-essential equipment. In any defense logistics engagement, we use technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA), radio frequency identification (RFID, both passive and active) and barcode scanning to track physical assets.

Our expertise extends to financial and operational asset management and real property. Finally, artificial intelligence is rapidly maturing and proving itself capable of making the kind of discretionary judgments that RPA cannot do.

Cybersecurity

Our national defense systems demand the tightest cybersecurity possible. CGI’s cybersecurity offerings span a wide range, from general cybersecurity consulting and training to highly specialized implementations. We provide zero trust strategies, application hardening, penetration testing and DevSecOps implementation support to enhance the security of Navy and Marine Corps systems.

Legacy modernization

National security threats evolve at the speed of light, making it imperative for the Navy and Marine Corps to keep pace through technology modernization.

Modernization can be expensive and may put ongoing operations at risk during transitions. However, continuing to rely on outmoded systems supported by dwindling numbers of experts is still more costly. Modernizing brings higher efficiency, better user experience, reduced total cost of ownership, process improvements and capability for rapid enhancements.

CGI applies a proven legacy modernization framework based on code conversion and automatic refactoring that offers a rapid, robust and flexible strategy for upgrading legacy systems.

Software Development

Rapid software development is critical for the Navy and Marine Corps.

We create low-code application platforms (LCAPs) that enable non-programmers to create or modify software to meet emergent mission needs quickly. Using drag-and-drop design, graphical representations of data and templates for frequently-used components, users can quickly get the software into a production environment.

CGI employs an Agile software development approach in our custom software development, which enables rapid upgrades, functionality enhancements and security patches. CGI was named Scaled Agile's first Global Transformation Partner in the world and remains one of only four Global Transformation Partners with SAFe.

jeep rolling off of transport ship

This Ro-Ro ship—for "roll on, roll off"—is just one of many kinds of vessels and vehicles involved in defense logistics. The ship, the jeep rolling off of it and hundreds of other jeeps still secured within its hull are all assets that demand an innovative and powerful asset management capability.

If that already sounds like a lot to track, add: small arms, food stores, uniforms, medical supplies, communications equipment, spare parts, sensor components and handheld computers. And still more.

Defense logistics is a complicated and ever-expanding undertaking. CGI is up to the task.
