Water scarcity has impacted several farmers in India, forcing them to migrate to cities to make a living. The Kolar district, near Bangalore in Karnataka is one such region that has been experiencing drought for many years leading farmers to abandon their lands and find alternate jobs.

CGI funded a unique project to support the revival of the Suddukunte lake in Kolar which has been dry for over 10 years. To restore nearly 1.5 kilometres of water channels to the farmland for irrigation, the channels were desilted to ensure rainwater inflow to the lake and bunds were restored to prevent overflow of water. These simple steps also resulted in recharge of groundwater in the village. The project is unique as it employed 20 local women for 30 days, generating income them to support their families and also help the local farmers to return to their land for cultivation. After a long dry spell, nearly 22 water wells in the village are at full capacity.

Our team and volunteers had the privilege to witness the positive impact of this project and listen to the stories from our beneficiaries. We are grateful to our teams and leaders for their commitment to building a sustainable world through these projects.
