First floating wind farm in continental Europe will be managed through RMS

In a major milestone for the renewable energy industry, continental Europe’s first floating wind farm will soon be ready to start producing electricity, and it will be monitored and controlled by RMS.

The groundbreaking new wind farm will have three massive Vestas V164 turbines, a model which broke the world record for power production during its prototype phase. With a swept area larger than the London Eye, each turbine has an installed capacity of an impressive 8 MW, with the three together producing enough energy to power 60,000 homes in one year.

These are the largest turbines ever to be installed on a floating platform. After in-dock assembly in Spain, the turbines will be towed to their final destination off the coast of northern Portugal, where the water reaches challenging depths of 100 meters.

When all three turbines are in place, they will be connected to the Renewables Management System (RMS) solution which energy trailblazer EDP Renewables (EDPR) uses to manage all of their renewable assets. The project belongs to the Windplus consortium, which is majority owned by EDPR, with support from Engie, Repsol and Principle Power. The cutting-edge WindFloat technology, which opens up deep water sites that were previously inaccessible to offshore turbines, has the potential to radically increase the contribution wind energy can make to global carbon-reduction targets, while reducing costs and risk factors.

European Utility Week, 12-14 November, Paris

In November, CGI will once again head to European Utility Week, to be held this year in the beautiful city of Paris. At the event, our global team of experts will showcase our proven suite of solutions for the utilities industry, including intelligent grid, central markets, smart metering, cybersecurity and augmented reality solutions, to name a few.

More than 18,000 industry professionals are expected to attend. This year, the conference will be co-located with Powergen Europe, giving you even more reason to attend!

Experts from the RMS team will also be on hand to answer your questions, and to demonstrate how our solution can transform your renewable power generation business. If you’d like to set up a meeting with our experts at the event, please click here.

RMS Operate Plus for 24x7 control rooms features Generator Detail screen

The RMS Operator Plus module responds to the challenging requirements of clients who use a 24x7 control room, where they carry out the supervision and control of a large portfolio of assets in real time.

A key part of the control room setup is the Generator Detail screen, which features detailed generator information, from manufacturer catalogue data to real-time values and historical records. If an operator finds problems in a particular wind turbine or solar inverter anywhere in the system, they can navigate to the Generator Detail screen and check the asset’s past, present and expected future operating status.

Data such as fault history, maintenance plans and real-time measurements help the user to understand the causes of the problem, while production trends, weather forecasts and predicted failures allow the operator to evaluate its impact.

Designed according to the best user experience practices, the generator timeline is a good example of how this information is displayed to the operator. It displays the recent history of the generator, from status changes and events, to planned interventions and predicted failures, in a simple and easy to understand way.

With all this information on hand, the operator can decide on the best course of action to resolve the problem. For wind generators, they can even take action directly in the command panel by stopping, resetting or restricting the turbine’s power output.
