Reliable connectivity has become a prerequisite for virtually every organization. Yet terrestrial mobile infrastructure (cell towers and ground-based infrastructure) remains less suited to locations where coverage is difficult or costly to deploy, such as across oceans, in rural and mountainous regions, at remote industrial sites, and where critical infrastructure is disrupted.

5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) provide an additional connectivity path. By integrating satellite connectivity into the existing 5G architecture, they create a hybrid network in which terrestrial and non-terrestrial access can complement one another. NTN is therefore not a replacement for mobile networks, but an additional access option for situations in which connectivity, service continuity, or resilience is of strategic importance.

Operational, economic, or societal value

The technology is rapidly moving from standardization and demonstrations toward practical applications. European initiatives, investments, and interoperability trials are creating new opportunities for governments, operators, and enterprises. At the same time, not all applications are equally mature. The value of NTN depends on the specific use case, the required performance, security and regulatory requirements, and the extent to which devices, operators, and satellite systems can interoperate.

The central question is therefore not whether an organization needs satellite connectivity, but where an additional connectivity path can deliver measurable operational, economic, or societal value. This whitepaper explores how organizations can answer that question. It examines the evolution of 5G NTN, the most important application areas, the European strategic context, and the considerations that apply to architecture, security, procurement, and deployment.

Strengthening continuity while preserving flexibility

The core message is clear: organizations that begin building targeted experience today around specific coverage and resilience challenges can strengthen service continuity while preserving the flexibility to evolve alongside the further development of NTN and 6G.

Would you like to better understand where 5G NTN can already deliver value today and which choices are required for a future-ready connectivity strategy? Read the full whitepaper. It provides European organizations with practical guidance for assessing opportunities, risks, and application areas, and for taking targeted steps toward greater connectivity, service continuity, and network resilience.
