Annually, CGI leaders around the world meet face-to-face with business and IT executives to gather their perspectives on the trends affecting their enterprises, including business and IT priorities, IT spending and investment plans. In 2019, we conducted in-person interviews with 27 client executives in the space sector, who cite the strong imperative to derive greater value from space data, and identify cybersecurity and IT modernization as their top focus areas.

In 2019, 52% of the space executives we interviewed have a digital strategy in place, well below the cross-industry average of 88%. For executives indicating they have enterprise-wide strategies, only 14% are producing results, which is ahead of the cross-industry average of 11%.

Cybersecurity concerns is the top challenge

Among the space executives interviewed, at 81%, “cybersecurity concerns” is cited as the top barrier to digital transformation, followed by lack of agility due to complex and aging legacy environments.

This year we asked space executives to share how they are using cloud-based solutions, and 15% are using them for their own organization, 4% for citizens/customers, and 30% for both. Additionally, they indicated how their organization’s cloud usage is divided between private, public and hybrid clouds (as shown in the above chart). Almost 20% report they are not using cloud solutions. Executives also were asked if they have mechanisms in place to locate where key data assets are stored in the cloud, and 52% report they do not have clarity on this question.

For the second year, business and IT executives interviewed ranked their satisfaction with their own IT organizations based on the 10 key attributes of a world-class IT organization. Overall, in the space sector, satisfaction with internal IT is low, at an average level of 6.7 out of 10. Unlike many other industries, however, space business leaders assess their level of satisfaction significantly higher than their IT counterparts for most measures.
